Ever since I first began building handpans, I have dreamed about tuning this scale. The B2 ding is the lowest note that I’ve attempted to date, and the results are fantastically beautiful. Known colloquially as the ‘Onoleo’ scale, this not-fully-major yet not-fully-minor mode evokes longing, depth, and mystery in me; similar to when I’m near the ocean, or feeling close to God. Friends that have been aware of my instrument building have asked, “When are you going to start selling handpans?“ My plan for this journey has always been a simple one: Keep going. See where it leads. An exceptionally talented tuner wisely once told me to simply “do good work” by serving the artform (shout out to Colin Foulke!) It is important to me that any instrument I ever sell be an instrument that I personally would be excited to play. After four years of practicing, learning, failing, and persevering, I am proud to say that I am still doing all of those things 😅. I’ve been a handpan player since 2010, and while my tuning journey has been slower than some (for 3 very cute and utterly joyful reasons), the instruments that I have been building recently are sounding like what I hoped they would when I first picked up the hammer in 2015. I’m going to begin offering my instruments for purchase, as well as taking custom orders for anyone who is interested. To avoid becoming overwhelmed, my production goals are quite small. My plan is to take five custom orders and also build five instruments in tunings that I find enjoyable. This E major scale is a nitrided instrument (gas heat treatment for rust prevention and increase of certain sonic potentials) known colloquially as the “Sabye” scale.
